In Saturday's match between West Ham and Fulham, Mike Dean - after being prompted by VAR - sent off Tomas Soucek for what appeared to be an elbow against Aleksandar Mitrovic. The decision seemed soft even at the time and with little else to talk about from the 0-0 draw, criticism was piled on Dean and the VAR Lee Mason. Things, as they do with regularity these days, soon escalated, resulting in anonymous death threats being directed at Mike Dean through social media.
This week, we ask if VAR is undermining our trust of referees. As a system designed to make life easier for officiators, is its micro-analysis of decisions drawing too much attention to the human errors they make?
